Maryland Licensing FAQ

  • Below are guidelines for how to get licensed – both initially and through reciprocity – in Maryland. If you have additional questions or concerns that are not addressed below, please reach out to your team lead and/or Sales Manager, or email licensingdmv@compass.com

    Letter of Certification:

    1. For the letter of certification from the Maryland Real Estate Commission, you can request this from DLLR online via this link (see bullet for "Request Certificate of Licensure").

    • First, review the FAQ from DLLR.

    • Complete the 60-hour pre-licensing course.

    • After passing both portions of the exam (national and Maryland state), DLLR will provide you with instructions and your registration information to apply for your license HERE.

      • You should receive this from the commission within 14 business days. Contact DLLR directly if it exceeds this time frame.

    2. The MREC only has reciprocal agreements with Pennsylvania and Oklahoma. Individuals actively licensed in all other states must provide a certificate of full licensing history from the state(s) where they were first licensed and are currently licensed.

    3. Draft a signed cover letter (wet or e-signature is accepted) with your signature, your mailing address, and complete contact information, including an email address.

    4. Send the cover letter and licensure history document (original only, not a copy) to the MREC within 30 days of its issue date.

      1. Send to the Education Administrator, Maryland Real Estate Commission, 100 S. Charles Street, Tower I, Baltimore, MD 21201 or email to mrec.licensehistory@maryland.gov

    5. If qualified, you will be sent all information needed to register for the Maryland state exam, and if you do not qualify you will be so advised. 

    6. After passing the Maryland state exam, DLLR will provide you with instructions and your registration information to apply for your license online.

  • EFFECTIVE 10/01/2024: ALL MARYLAND LICENSEES MUST COMPLETE + SUBMIT THEIR CONTINUING EDUCATION 30 DAYS IN ADVANCE OF EXPIRATION. FINES WILL BE ISSUED FOR LATE SUBMISSION

    • Associate Broker license renewal fee $123 (subject to change).

    • Salesperson license renewal fee $78 (subject to change).

    If your license renewal date lapses, you can reinstate your expired MD license without re-examination for up to three years from the last valid expiration date, subject to:

    • Compliance with applicable CE requirements for the period of non-licensure;

    • Payment of all past due renewal fees; and

    • Payment of a reinstatement fee of $168 (subject to change

Is there a fee/dues for joining Compass DMV Referrals?

Yes, it is $150.00 annually. Compass DMV Referrals charges all its members annual dues. Payment is due January 1 of each calendar year. Dues are non-refundable and they cover the 12-month period from January 1 to December 31, or any portion of that year.

What happens if I decide to move to the Compass DMV Referrals company?

Once you reach out to us indicating that you would like to join the referral brokerage, we will submit the transfer request in our internal system. The national onboarding team will then reach out within 5 business days with an introductory email and instructions on how to proceed and what you should expect moving forward.
